What are the Differences Between LED Power Supply and Ordinary Power Supply?

2025-06-11

With the widespread popularity of LED lighting technology, LED power supply, as a type of power supply designed specifically for LED devices, is significantly different from traditional ordinary power supplies in many aspects.   LED power supply, essentially a device that provides power to LED electronic equipment, converts AC to DC through transformers and rectifiers to adapt to the working characteristics of LED.

LED Power Supply

Compared with ordinary power supplies, the output characteristics of LED power supplies are a key difference.  LED is more sensitive to current changes, small current fluctuations may affect its luminous stability, life and light decay, so LED power supply is usually designed as a constant current source to ensure that the output current is stable near the rated value required by LED, even if the load changes, the current can be maintained relatively constant.  The ordinary power supply, in most cases, is a constant voltage source, and the output voltage is stable, which is suitable for electronic equipment with high voltage stability requirements and less sensitive to current changes, such as computers, televisions, etc.

From the point of view of design purpose, LED power supply is extremely targeted, mainly serving LED lighting, display and other fields.  Due to the variety of LED lighting application scenarios, from indoor home lighting, commercial lighting, outdoor street lamps, landscape lighting projects, etc., different scenarios have different protection performance, size specifications, heat dissipation requirements, etc. for power supply.  Ordinary power supply is oriented to a wider range of electronic equipment categories, and its design considers more versatility to meet the diversified requirements of different equipment in terms of voltage, power, etc. Therefore, the design in terms of size, protection level, etc. is relatively broad and can be flexibly adjusted according to specific application scenarios.

In circuit design and control technology, the power supply adopts a more complex and targeted control scheme to achieve constant current output.  In order to ensure stable operation and luminous quality of LED, constant current control and constant voltage control technology are often used, and soft switching technology, synchronous rectification technology and power factor correction technology are combined to improve the efficiency and stability of power supply.  On the other hand, ordinary power supply, its control mode is flexible and diverse, according to different load requirements, there are voltage control, current control, double loop control and other modes, but generally more focused on the stability of the output voltage, the requirements for accurate current control are relatively low, in some cost-sensitive application scenarios, even a relatively simple control circuit will be adopted to meet the basic power function requirements.
